The Great Day Of The Lord

"The great day of the Lord is near-
near and coming quickly.
Listen! The cry on the day of the Lord
will be bitter, the shouting of the warrior
there.
That day will be a day of wrath,
a day of distress and anguish,
a day of trouble and ruin,
a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and blackness,
a day of trumpet and battle cry
against the fortified cities
and against the corner towers.

I will bring distress on the people
and they will walk like blind men,
because they have sinned against
the Lord.
Their blood will be poured out like
dust and their entrails like filth.
Neither their silver or gold will be
able to save them on the day of
the Lord's wrath.
In the fire of His jealousy the whole
world will be consumed, for He will
make a sudden end of all who live
in the earth."

Zephaniah 1: 14-18

There are both historical and scatological (end times) interpretations of these verses. The historical one refers to the fall of Jerusalem, first from the Babylonians and lastly from the Romans, where people during those times were trapped inside the walls of Jerusalem under siege from the Babylonians. Life was so miserable then because of the scarcity of food that some Israelites resorted to cannibalism by eating their children just to survive the onslaught. In both the Babylonian and the Roman siege of the walls of Jerusalem and the eventual destruction of its magnificent temple, very few escaped the sword and death. On the scatological (end times) interpretation of these verses, people of the world have been shown examples of how the end times will come. These examples were the deluge during Noah's time, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, the seven great plagues on Egypt and the fall of Jerusalem. The earth will be tried by fire where all the elements will melt and where there will be terrible signs in the sky. After the worldwide cataclysm, Jesus Christ will appear amidst the loud voice of the angel and the trumpet calls that shall emanate around the world. Those who have been dead shall rise first through the powerful command of the Lord, and the living and dead shall be judged. Those whose names are not written in the Book of Life shall be condemned to the Lake of Fire together with the devil and his minions. The righteous and those who called on the name of the Lord will rise with Him to His heavenly abode.

Hi TeJan ,
This Biblical prophecy by the prophet Zephaniah was very frightful indeed. But Christians are not afraid of the end times because we have always been prepared for the coming of the Lord. Thanks for your visit and inspiring comments. God bless you always.

Being a member of the 'chosen people' is a double edged sword. When you do good God is happy, but when you don't He's not. He expects His people to set an example to the rest of the world and only worship Him, instead of false Gods or idols; otherwise He brings suffering in order to draw them to Him again. He has a covenant with the people of Israel, and He has not broken it. It’s the people who have let Him down, not Him. You see this time and time again in the Old Testament, but always whenever things seem dire He comes to the rescue and saves them from total annihilation. I think disobedience will once again lead to the dire end times’ predictions in the Book of Revelations.

Hi JI,
How right you are and I agree with you 100%. Obedience to His will brings blessings from the Lord and disobedience brings curses. Our God is a jealous God and He does not countenance any false god being worshiped by His children. Thanks for your visit and inspired comments. God bless you always.

Everyday when I wake up, I sometimes think that this might be the day that our Lord would come back, and at the back of my mind there is fear, but I constantly remind myself that I believe in Him and my faith will save me from the flames of hell...

Hi Kathy,
Hindi tayo dapat matakot sa pagbabalik nang Panginoon dahil nangako naman Siya na hindi Niya tayo pababayaan ni iiwan. Ang ginagawa ko ay kini claim ko yung pangako Niya sa Acts 16:31 na, "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, you and your household." Kaya kini claim ko ang pangako Niyang iyan para sa aking pamilya't sambahayan. Ipanalangin natin ang ating mga kapatid na wala pa sa kalinga nang Pangainoon. Salamat sa dalaw at comments. God bless you all always.
