The Suffering Servant

"Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,
Yet we consider Him stricken by God, smitten by Him, and afflicted.

But He was pierced for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him,
And by His wounds we are healed.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."

Isaiah 53: 4-6

Jesus already paid the full price for our salvation. He who knows no sin became sin for us so that we can approach the Father without any condemnation. All that we have to do is accept the grace of salvation by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and personal savior and surrendering our lives to Him. When Jesus Christ uttered one of His last words on the cross and said, "It is finished," He meant just that.

Hi Mel,

Those words of Isaiah were written several hundred years before Christ, yet they describe the forthcoming Messiah so well. Amazing isn't it? There are many other prophecies about the Messiah in the Old Testament that were fulfilled by Jesus. It simply would have been impossible for an ordinary human being to accidentally fulfil all those prophecies so accurately.

The question of suffering and why God allows it happen is still one that puzzles me. Why do people, often good people, have to suffer so much? I have no categorical answer. I do think, however, suffering has a way of bringing people closer to God. Man also causes a lot suffering by his own evil acts. God gave us free will.

If God was simple then it would be easy to understand Him, but He is not simple. I think everything is ultimately under His control and everything follows His plan. As Jesus said, we should live each day as if it was the last. That way we will become better people ourselves. We should, therefore, accept suffering as an essential part of life. What do you think about suffering?

Hi JI,
First of all, I agree with your observations about prophecies. It shows that the Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit because of the fulfillment of Biblical prophecies. And I also agree with you that we as creatures of God cannot question God on whatever He does for God is sovereign and He can do as He pleases irregardless of whether His creatures understand His actions or not. Regarding suffering, that is the way of God to discipline His beloved children just as an earthly father would discipline his own children. The child could not understand the pain and heartaches he goes through because of his father's disciplinary actions. But later on in life, the offspring realizes that his father was right all along and he (the offspring) actually benefited from such discipline. Suffering is also an instrument of God to purify His beloved disciples who must suffer the consequences of his previous sins. Suffering is a painful process because it is like the purification process of turning gold ore into pure gold. In the process of suffering and trials, God gives His amazing grace for us to overcome such trials. After the desert experience (the trials), God ushers us to His promise land of deliverance where we come out stronger and ready to become a channel of God's blessings and comfort to others who are undergoing sufferings and trials. Thanks for your visit and comments. God bless you always.

Hi Dhemz,
That's how God loves us. The sovereign Lord adored by millions of angels went down to earth to suffer and die for our sins. We should have been crucified for our own sins but Christ died in our place. Is it too hard for us to accept His invitation for salvation by accepting Him as our Lord and savior? We can never work for our own salvation because God already did it for us. We can only accept His grace of salvation in all humility. Thanks for your visit and comments. God bless you all always.
